A Poor Girl, directed by the always proficient veteran Chiang Wai-kwong, is adapted
from a famous Cantonese opera by Chin Lei-kui. Leung So-kam plays the villain, a wife who not only has an extramarital affair but also, when her adultery is witnessed by a child, coldheartedly commits murder and frames the slain child’s mother for the crime. She appears alongside opera luminaries Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin and more than holds her own with an outstanding turn in both singing and acting, interpreting her character not as evil but a cunning, two-faced woman.
