A gripping story of how the unfailing love of a mother redeems her son from evil ways. In an emotionallycharged exchange between mother and son, the camera captures her tear-laden eyes and soft beseeching tone, punctuated by disheartening silence, creating a beautiful display of motherly love that lasts around five minutes. It's a huge pity that Mother Dearest (1956), based on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and also featuring Lin Ching, is lost, denying audiences another tour de force of one of Hong Kong cinema's favorite mothers.
