The partitioned tenement lends itself to cinema, its environment of households squeezed in the same apartment comes with built-in conflicts and idealistic outlook for collective good. In Between Fire and Water, 17 characters distributed over eight families are living under the same roof and director Zhu Shilin masterfully creates drama from their intertwined lives as they tussle over water and hustle against fire. Fung Lam plays a taxi dancer, capturing her as both a mean-spirited bully and a hurt, lonely who cries in her room.
