Arriving in Hong Kong after the war, Tong Yuejuan and her husband Zhang Shankun continued to produce films, setting color films as their next major goal. In 1955, their Hsin Hwa Company went to Japan to produce color films on 35mm film stock. In addition to Beauty in Tokyo (1955) and Madame Butterfly (1956), which are partially in color, the company produced this fully color film, a remake of Blood-stained Begonia (1949). Taking the role originally played by Bai Guang, Li Lihua shines in the provocative role of a conniving woman who returns to her estranged daughter’s life and threatens to reveal the family’s dark past. Thought to be lost for decades, the print used for this screening comes from Japan’s Kawakita Memorial Film Institute, who had generously lent out the sole existing print of the film to the Hong Kong Film Archive.
