Dirs: Yeung Kung-leong, Ling Wan
Co-starring: Hung Sin Nui, Leung Sing-po
1952 / B&W / D Beta / Cantonese / 87 min
Based on Chaplin’s classic film City Lights (1931), this remake retains the spirit of the tramp, blending pathos and social commentary with Yee Chau-shui’s signature slapstick. Yee, fondly nicknamed as the Oriental Chaplin, plays the kind-hearted vagrant who struggles to help the blind flower girl (Hung Sin Nui). Leung Sing-po co-stars, in one of many pairings that feature two of Hong Kong's best comic personalities. The most apparent difference with the original is probably the singing that features the three Cantonese opera stars.
