While the romance between Ah Chen (Tsi Lo Lin) and Chan Chi-chiu (Ng Cho-fan) forms the core of A Flower Reborn, Wong Man-lei’s role of Chan’s overprotective and superstitious mother is the character that undergoes the biggest transformation. Over the course of the story, she changes from an understanding mother to a stubborn and mean villain who forces the couple to separate when she finds out that Ah Chen is a jinx to anyone she marries (as dictated by superstitions). Chan eventually falls ill as a result of the break-up, and his mother will discover that Ah Chen’s love and care are better for her son’s healing than any lucky charm or holy water.
