This is a work that signifies the passing of the torch from one generation to another. Cantonese cinema superstar Patrick Tse Yin produced and directed this Mandarin film, a remake of Chor Yuen's 1960s romance Be My Love (1968, with the same Chinese title), in which Tse is the lead. Here, his role is assumed by Alan Tang, his fellow member of the Rat Pack, Hong Kong's answer to Frank Sinatra's gang. Tang, a one-third partner on the business side, is teamed with Chen Chen, a frequent partner in his romance phase. The Splendid Love in Winter is typically melodramatic in its 1970s ways, but Tang turns in a heart-felt performance that demonstrates why he was a major heart throb of his time.
