Opera superstar Sun Ma Si-tsang is a close friend of Luk Wan-fung and appears frequently in his company’s films. Here, he goes against type to play a painter, competing for the heart of a girl against a fellow artist, a musician. Much drama and comedy are squeezed from the situation. One high point is a spectacle at the beach, where Sun Ma puts on display his never photographed pencil-thin physique! On the other hand, opera diva Pak Suet-sin is given ample opportunities to parade in the chicest of fashions, her style and the confidence it projects embodying the chutzpah of the new woman emerging out of mid-20th century Hong Kong.
