Education is no guarantee for a life on easy street. But hard work and resilience promise improvement. A little luck always helps. But connections are just as vital. And a good heart gets the girl! Cheong has a secondary school diploma hanging on his wall, but it means nothing on the job market. He (opera superstar Sun Ma Si-tsang) slaves and sings at a teahouse, winning the affections of the owner’s daughter but the ire of his wife… Billed as “A Great Social Realist Wenyi Pian”, the film uses harsh life circumstances as foundations of its drama, yet it manages to rise above bleakness to deliver a work of fun and charm.
