Many an adaptation had been made into opera, film and television of the misadventure of Tiger Wong and his ‘bride’. Originally a work of Suzhou tanci, or chantefable, a style of Chinese storytelling that combines singing and instrumental music, it’s a story of cross dressing, wife snatching and romantic garden encounters. This lively Cantonese opera version features opera star Ho Fei-fan as Chow, one of the “Four Great Scholars in the South” who finds himself blessed with a talent for looking and acting like a beautiful woman. When he appears in drag at the Lantern Festival, flirting with his best friend, he-she attracts the attention of the bully Tiger Wong, who seizes him-her as wife…
