*Meet-the-Artist Session after the matinee performance (In Putonghua)

The music Confucius Reading the Book of Changes attempts to recreate the sounds and actions of the great philosopher, Confucius, reading The Book of Changes on an autumn evening – the cadence of reading aloud, the involuntary movements of the head as he palates every phrase, etc. – through quick left-hand fingering of shuang zhuang, and the resonating glissandi. The effect is therefore lyrical and mellow, with ringing reverberations. This is therefore a charming piece in the repertoire of the Shu stylistic school.

About the Performer

The Shu style is agitated, like the roar of surging waves, making it one of the most outstanding of its time.

Zeng Chengwei

A guqin maker and virtuoso in the genre, Zeng Chenwei is one of the most distinguished qin artists of the Shu stylistic school today. He trained in the guqin after the style of his maternal grandfather and a maestro, Yu Shaoze, and has more than thirty years of experience playing the instrument. His style is typical of the Shu school in that it is solid yet freehanded, natural without over-embellishment, thus producing tone colours that are pure and earthy. His fingering is well thought out, crisp and exemplifies the literati traits of solemn elegance with no eye for frivolous details. Yet all in all, his musicianship has the exemplary precision and keen insight expected of a virtuoso. Performance aside, Zeng is also a fine maker of the instrument. The guqins he makes are acclaimed for their robustness in sound yet resonating clarity in the overtones. He is currently an associate professor in Chinese music at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Deputy Head of the Guqin Research Centre, and Vice President of the Guqin Professional Committee of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. He was named a Representative Bearer of Guqin of the Sichuan Stylistic School, an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Sichuan, in 2009.

Zeng He

Zeng He is the son of Zeng Chengwei and the seventh generation qin player of the Sichuan stylistic school of guqin. He learned the art from his father at the age of nine, and is therefore immersed in the art since a young age. Later he was admitted to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music with outstanding entrance scores. With his family influence supplemented by formal training, he is considered a star ascendant in the qin circle today. He is currently on the Master’s degree programme of the Conservatory, and has given recitals in Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Tianjin. He has published a paper on the qin study of Yu Shaoze, and is the Assistant Chief Editor of A History of Shu Style Qin as Told by Qin Players.
