About the Performer

Four Gig Heads Percussion Group

Four Gig Heads Percussion Group was founded in 1998 by local young percussionists who are graduates of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.  The group is an independent and systemized non-profit making professional percussion company.  The aim of the group is to promote percussion music of both east and west genres.  The members also compose and arrange percussion music themselves to expand new dimensions for music as well as create a unique culture for Hong Kong.

The group has often been invited to various types of cultural performances in Hong Kong and international cultural activities, including the arts festivals in London, the Philippines and Berlin.  In addition to giving a wide variety of performances, Four Gig Heads is also dedicated to the promotion of music education in Hong Kong.  It has given many educational concerts in schools, and has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Hong Kong.  It was also an Artist-in-Residence of RTHK in 2003.  It was also a guest performer at the 3rd CheonAn-Gak Won International Temple Music Festival in CheonAn, South Korea in 2008.  In 2007, it formed the Made in Hong Kong @ Four Gig Heads, which is a youth group taking professional training by Angus Fu, the Director of Four Gig Heads.  The aim of establishing the youth group is to provide a high quality platform for those who are interested in percussion music.

“Four Gig Heads has a versatile repertoire encompassing an impressive array of styles, including Peking opera percussion music, gong-and-drum music of eastern Zhejiang, the daliuzi of the Tujia ethnic minority of western Hunan, American country music, Brazilian samba, as well as works by leading contemporary composers.  The group is credited for its ability to embrace different musical traditions and forges a unique place among percussion ensembles today.“ – Dr. Chan Hing-yan
