The Horqin Ensemble of Inner Mongolia

The Horqin Ensemble of Inner Mongolia is made up of ethnic Mongolians who were born and raised in nomad families on the grassland of Inner Mongolia.  They learned to play folk music instruments such as the morin kuur (horsehead fiddle) from their parents or folk artists when they were young, and later enrolled in professional music institutes to receive formal and systematic training to improve their techniques.  Upon graduation, they worked in professional performing arts troupes of Inner Mongolia.  Each member is able to play the bowed-string and plucked-string instruments as well as tackle the unique ‘throat singing’ of khoomi.  They have performed in CCTV gala shows and events in China and abroad, and won many awards.  As a new generation of Mongolian performers, they are armed with musical virtuosity, inborn robustness and expansive style that are associated with the vast grassland that they call home.
