Xiamen Nanyin Troupe
The Xiamen Nanyin Troupe was formerly the Xiamen Golden Phoenix Southern Tunes Music Troupe, founded in 1954. The founding director was Ji Jingmu. The members were stringently trained by virtuosi such as Bai Hou, Ren Qingshui, Bai Lihua and Lin Yuyan, so they are able to incorporate the merits of both the traditional and the innovative in terms of styles and techniques. The musicianship of the players is outstanding, both in terms of harmony, rapport and the overall effect of each piece, as seen in the melodic lines, rhythms, spirit and timbre. As for the vocalists, they are able to deliver with accurate emotive control through the use of the voice, clear diction and orthodox tones. Their performances therefore exude a quaint elegance and insight which have won for the group professional acclaim, in the Mainland and overseas, over the decades.
The Troupe has been building its repertoire by gleaning from the traditional as well as creating new, original works. The former includes Chen San and Wu Niang, Lady Zhaojun, Zhu Bian and Liu Zhiyuan, and the latter, Thanks to the Princess, Spring Comes to the Garden: Snow, By the Banks of Xunyang River, The Spirit of Southern Tunes, A Gathering on the Riverside Mansion, Xiamen and Kinmen Are So Close, We Shall Meet on Formosa, Where Love Abides etc.. These outstanding works have won many awards at provincial and national levels. The song-and-dance production, sung in Nanyin, Song of Eternal Lament, won the New Repertory Award at the 10th Wenhua Awards presented by the Ministry of Culture in China. The nanyin performance featuring singing with staged movements, We Shall Meet on Formosa, in 2010 won a Programme Prize at the 6th ‘Peony Awards’ for Chinese Song Art, and it marked the first ever award of such a prestigious category won by the song art sector of Fujian Province. In June 2012, the new Nanyin production, Where Love Abides, won a nomination to the 7th ‘Peony Awards’. It was followed by the Troupe’s debut at the 1st International Pipa Festival held in Jilin with Song of the Return of the Fabulous Bird in the form of accompanied singing. The international audience and the people of the Mainland were impressed with the refreshing, lilting qualities of the genre of Nanyin.
