A New Cantonese Opera

The Seven Captivations of Meng Huo by Zhuge Liang

Playwright: Li Ming-hang

The story takes place during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280). Liu Bei of Shu has just passed away, and the lord of the south, Meng Huo, wants to seize the opportunity to revolt. Zhuge Liang, Prime Minister of Shu, takes over as commander and leads the army south. With his clever stratagem, he captures Meng seven times but also releases him afterwards every time. The leniency finally brings Meng round and he surrenders to Shu. On its way back, the Shu army comes to the banks of the Lu River. Suddenly the sky grows dim and the river becomes stormy. No man or horse can cross. Zhuge Liang sets up an altar and conducts a rite of appeasing those who have lost their lives in the war himself. Soon the sky clears, the water stills, and the entire army can cross the river safely to return to their own land.
