Kunqu Opera Film The Fifteen Strings of Cash

You Hulu, a butcher shop owner in the county of Wuxi, borrows fifteen strings of cash as the capital money of his business.  He plays a joke on his daughter, Su Shujuan, by saying that he has sold her for the money.  Shujuan believes it to be true and escapes during the night.  A gambler and ruffian, Lou A-Shu, breaks into You’s house late at night.  He steals the fifteen strings of cash to settle his gambling debts and kills You Hulu.  However, he frames Shujuan for murdering her father for the money.  After leaving home, Shujuan travels with Xiong Youlan, a merchant’s servant whom she has never met before.  The neighbours find them suspicious and Xiong is found having exactly fifteen strings of cash by coincidence.  They are then taken to the government office.  The county magistrate strongly believes the false accusations against Shujuan and convicts her of adultery, theft of money and killing of her father.  Both Shujuan and Xiong are sentenced to death.  Kuang Zhong, who is assigned to supervise the execution, suspects that it is an unjust verdict and does his best to suspend the execution.  After thorough investigation, Kuang Zhong unveils flaws in Lou’s statement.  He then disguises himself as a fortune-teller and coaxes a verbal confession of murder from Lou.  Lou is then taken back to the government office for trial and the truth is finally revealed.  Xiong and Shujuan are cleared from all the charges whereas the murderer is executed.

Peking Opera Film The Lady Warriors of the Yang Family

During the reign of Emperor Renzong in the Song Dynasty, the King of Xixia invades the Song territory.  Marshal Yang Zongbao leads the Song army to fight against the enemy.  He is killed by arrow shots when exploring the way in an inaccessible valley.  The Xixia army besieges the frontier pass.  Huaiyuan (son of Meng Liang) and Tinggui (son of Jiao Zan) rush back to the imperial court and ask for reinforcements.  Lady She, while holding a banquet in celebration of the 50th birthday of her grandson Zongbao, is overwhelmed with grief after learning the sad news.  Young Yang Wenguang volunteers to go to the front.  Yet his great grandmother does not allow him to do so because he is the sole male heir to the Yang family.  To settle the matter, Lady She orders Wenguang’s mother, Mu Guiying, to compete with her son in a martial arts contest on the drill ground.  With the help of Guiying who throws the fight and the advice given by the wife of Lady She’s seventh son, Wenguang wins the contest and then follows the army to the border.  The Yang warriors repulse the attack of Xixia forces and drive straight on to their home base.  The King of Xixia concocts a ruse to lure Wenguang into the valley and the Yang warriors decide to turn his ruse against him.  They force their way into the valley and climb up to a plank road under the guidance of an old horse that knows the way and an old herb-gatherer.  Having received Guiyang’s signal of breaking through the natural barrier, the Yang warriors lead the army to attack the enemy’s camp from within and without, and destroy the Xi.
