16 May Lunar Occultation of Venus

As the Moon and planets are constantly moving along the Zodiac, the Moon occults planets from time to time and creates a spectacular view. The Moon occults Venus about twice a year on the average, but each event can only be seen from a small region on Earth. Moreover, being an inferior planet, Venus never wanders far away from the Sun. This explains why most of the occultations of Venus happen in daytime, making it difficult to observe.

However, the occultation on 16 May is easy to observe because it happens after sunset. One can easily appreciate the event by going to a place with unobstructed view in the WNW direction. The last occultation of Venus over Hong Kongˇ¦s night sky happened on 2 December 1989 and the next one will not occur until 24 March 2023.
