Stars twinkling in the night sky are just like the amorous eyes of lovers. Yet to astronomers, the twinkling of stars caused by unstable atmospheric conditions poses an obstacle to observation. To overcome this problem, astronomer Lyman Spitzer in 1946 proposed to construct a space telescope.

In 1994, chunks of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which had broken apart a year earlier, slammed into Jupiter.

After years of lobbying, frustrations, financial and technical problems, the Space Telescope was finally launched in 1990. It was named after the famous astronomer Edwin Hubble. Before long, astronomers found that the images sent back by Hubble were blurred due to a mistake in the grinding of the primary mirror. In 1993, astronauts installed corrective optics for Hubble and it was able to display its true power finally.

The latest Sky Show ˇ§Hubble Space Telescopeˇ¨ takes the audience to a journey through the universe by the Hubble Space Telescope, venturing from the closest planets to the most distant galaxies. In 1994, Hubble captured the historical event of a comet smashing into Jupiter. Taking snapshots of stars at different stages of evolution, Hubble allowed astronomers to study the birth and death of stars in details.

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star's supernova explosion which was recorded in 1054 by Chinese astronomers.

Hubble captured a spectacular pair of galaxies engaged in a celestial dance. The galaxies will eventually merge into a single giant galaxy.
|
On a larger scale, the life and death of galaxies were revealed in collisions of galaxies. The greatest discovery of Hubble was probably the observation of a featureless region for ten consecutive days to collect the dimmest light. Unexpectedly, the remotest and earliest galaxies showed up. Hubble not only allows us to look further away and back in time, it also enables astronomers to explore the future of the universe.

A galaxy cluster acts as a powerful gravitational lens, magnifying and stretching the distant galaxies lying behind the cluster core.

Hubble's deepest view of the universe uncovered a bewildering assortment of at least 1,500 galaxies at various stages of evolution. Most of the galaxies are so faint that they have never before been seen by even the largest telescopes.
