For centuries, humanity has wondered whether we are alone in the Universe.

Now, we are finally one step closer to knowing the answer. With the discovery in 1995 of the first planet orbiting another star, we now know that planets are not unique to our own Solar System. In fact, these "extrasolar planets" now appear to be quite common.

Sky Show "Extreme Planets" will explore what makes a planet "Earth-like", and take an immersive all-dome tour of several worlds that just might fit the conditions we are looking for. From water worlds to molten landscapes, inhabitable moons to planets with multiple suns, these exotic worlds are no longer mere science fiction!

An extrasolar planet is orbiting a neutron star. Rocks on the surface of this planet fluoresce under the intense glow of ultraviolet light from the neutron star. Auroras in eerily colours continually dance across the planet's sky.

An earthlike planet orbiting a nearby star would be one ten billionth the brightness of its parent star. Trying to see this planet is extremely difficult. The ultimate goal of astronomers is to directly photograph a planet orbiting a nearby star.

This planet's thick atmosphere carries warm air from the hot side to the cold side, thus moderating its temperature to a habitable range.

Within just thirty light years of Earth, astronomers estimate there could be as many as 10,000 extrasolar planets. Our Milky Way galaxy conceivably holds trillions of planets. And, similarly, among the several hundred billion other galaxies inhabiting our universe there could be infinitely more.
