How much do you know about soil and slopes? Do you know how soil
and rocks were formed in Hong Kong over the past hundred millions
of years? Why are there so many slopes and landslides in Hong Kong?
What has the government done to tackle the landslide problem and what
should we do to avoid such a risk? If we learn more about the nature
and behaviour of soil and rocks, and the history of slope formation
in Hong Kong, we might be able to better appreciate the slope problems
Hong Kong has to face and be able to act in line with the government
to keep the risk of landslides to a minimum.
In order to introduce soil science and slope safety to the general
public, a special exhibition "Discover Soil and Slope" is
jointly organized by the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Civil Engineering
Department for displaying from 31 July 2002 for a period of two months
in the Main Lobby of the Science Museum as part of the activities
for celebration of the fifth anniversary of the HKSAR.
The main objective of this exhibition is to enhance our knowledge
of soil and slopes and the causes of landslides; and hence raise the
awareness of the public on slope safety and preparedness against landslide
risk. The exhibition also promotes understanding of the Hong Kong
Slope Safety System and the role of the Civil Engineering Department
in reducing landslide risk.
Exhibition Period: 30.7.2002 - 2.10.2002
Venue: Main Lobby, Hong Kong Science Museum
