Introduction Einstein as a scientist Einstein as a humanitarian Einstein as a Jew

Although Einstein deplored any form of nationalism and sectarianism, he believed in the basic principles of Zionism and supported the State of Israel until the end of his life. He saw Jewish statehood as "the embodiment of the reawakening of the corporate spirit of the entire Jewish nation," and as the proper realm in which Jewish values and creativity could be revitalized and flourish. He was even offered the presidency of the State of Israel by David Ben Gurion, which he rejected with regret.

Albert Einstein was also one of the founders of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and he served on its first Board of Governors and Academic Council. His papers and literary estate are housed in the Albert Einstein Archives located in the Jewish National and University Library.
