“Cultural Relics of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture” Exhibition

Located in the west of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture extends from the middle of Yunnan province towards the northwest. The region covers an area of 29,258 km2 and, in late 2007, had a population of 2.6022 million people, of which the Yi ethnic group constitutes 26.9%.

The spectacular Mount Wumong, the snowy Baicao Ridges, the stout but elegant Mount Ailao, the historic River Jinsha and the ever-flowing River Lishe are all landmarks that have helped characterise this ancient, magical, beautiful and charming land. Home to a number of relics, including the 1.7-million-year-old “Yuanmou Man”, the world's first ever bronze drum, the fossils of dinosaurs and other ancient life forms, as well as the long and rich cultural heritage of the Yi ethnic group, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture is famously known as the “Oriental Cradle of Mankind”, “Homeland of the Dinosaurs” and the “Spectacular Garden of Yi Culture”.

This exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the People's Government of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and organized by the Hong Kong Museum of History, Antiquities and Monuments Office and Museum of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. It is made up of three sections, namely "Yuanmou Man", "Bronze Culture" and "Yi Culture", which introduces the history and culture of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Displaying some 30 selected exhibits from the Museum of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, the exhibition offers a rare occasion for visitors to discover Chuxiong.
