The building was opened in 1923 under the Sanitary Department (then Urban Services Department, USD). Only a small portion was used as a temporary fire sub-station with only 10 firemen and one motor pump. It then became the Kennedy Town Fire Station and renamed as Western Fire Station in 1937. It is unknown when the building ceased to be a fire station, which then became USD’s staff quarters and then a primary school run by the USD Staff General Association inside the premises during 1951–1976. The building was taken over by the Social Welfare Department in 1986, which then converted it into an elderly home managed by Po Leung Kuk. It is a very handsomely proportioned four-storey brick structure with a symmetrical facade and windows with louvres above. |
