The building was first opened in 1891 as a lunatic asylum for Chinese patients. It is a two-storey red brick and granite structure which originally could house only 16 patients since at that time most Chinese patients would go to Guangzhou for treatment. A one-storey medical staff quarters was built next to it in simple rectangular plan. The design of the main building is Renaissance Classical Revival in style with scant ornamentation. It has a simple pitched roof, a half-basement and an arcade on the first floor. The building now serves as a methadone treatment clinic. |
