Technique of Making Hong Kong Cheongsam
and Kwan Kwa Wedding Costume

Cheongsam and kwan kwa became popular during the early Republican period. Men's cheongsam is socially significant, as it symbolises seniority amongst clansmen in the New Territories. When women's cheongsam became widespread in Hong Kong, its sewing technique took up both Eastern and Western costume designs, which slowly gave it a distinct look. Kwan kwa, a traditional wedding costume for brides, is traditionally handmade and decorated with dragons and phoenixes. Hong Kong Cheongsam Making Technique was inscribed onto the Fifth National List of ICH in 2021.
