Dr Sun Yat-sen in Paper-cut Silhouette
An exhibition to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Dr Sun Yat-sen's birth

As a revolutionary pioneer in modern China, Dr Sun Yat-sen was renowned for transforming China from a monarchy to a republic. To achieve his ideal, he travelled extensively around the world. The memorials in Dr Sun's commemoration remain as life testimonies to his epoch-making achievements and the overwhelming changes to China after the 1911 Revolution. As 12 November 2006 marks the 140th anniversary of Dr Sun's birth, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Chinese Arts Papercutting Association are proud to greet the late Dr Sun Yat-sen with this special exhibition. Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the China 21 Bureau, about 30 symbolic photos of Dr Sun have been selected as the basis for paper-cutting. These paper-cuts by Ms Lu Xue, a famous Chinese paper-cut artist, not only reveal the superb handiwork of a traditional craft, but also provide a glimpse into the legendary life of the most renowned revolutionary in Chinese history.

This paper-cut shows the Four Desperados taken in 1888 on the third floor of Alice Memorial Hospital. From left to right were the Four Desperaods, namely Yang Heling, Dr Sun Yat-sen, Chen Shaobai and Yau Lit. Standing behind them was Guan Jingliang.	On 10 October 1911, the Wuchang uprising broke out while Dr Sun Yat-sen was in the USA advocating revolution and raising funds. Dr Sun returned to Shanghai on 25 December. Reference has been made to a photo taken on 21 December 1911, and this paper-cut shows Dr Sun on board on a homebound steamer via Hong Kong.
