Collections from the Musˆme Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris and the Bibliothˆoque Historique de la Ville de Paris

In the 18th and 19th century, a number of revolts and revolutions broke out in France. Among them, the French Revolution that lasted from 1789 to 1799 brought an end to the absolute monarchy. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen adopted by the National Assembly on 26 August 1789 set forth the equality and liberty of individual. Such notion had been widely spread in Europe since the outbreak of French Revolution. Subsequent revolutions were triggered throughout the Continent in the 19th century. Featuring some 180 items selected from the collections of the Musˆme Carnavalet ¡V Histoire de Paris and the Bibliothˆoque Historique de la Ville de Paris, this exhibition introduces the revolutions of France in the 18th and 19th century through such paintings as The Tennis Court Oath, Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, the storming of the Bastille, together with other memorabilia of the 1830 and 1848 revolutions and the invaluable photographs recording the 1871 revolution.

The Museum offers public guided tours and pre-booked group visit with docent services from 24 December 2008 (Wed) onwards.
