The 8-Year War of Resistance

1 July 2005 - 22 February 2006
Upper Gallery

The year 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the War of Resistance against Japan. China and Japan fought two wars in modern history. The Sino-Japanese War in 1894 ended in Chinaˇ¦s defeat. Since then, Japan had cast its covetous eyes on China. Japanˇ¦s military invasion began with the September 18 Incident in 1931, which triggered nationwide resistance efforts. Full-scale war between China and Japan broke out in 1937 when the ˇ§July 7 Incidentˇ¨ occurred. The war also witnessed the cooperation between the Nationalists and the Communists. The Nationalist army fought frontal wars with Japan to overstretch and deplete the Japanese forces, while the Communists disrupted Japanˇ¦s supply lines in the occupied territory with guerilla tactics. China finally won the 8-Year War of Resistance when Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945.

This exhibition, featuring about 100 pieces of artefacts and accompanied by valuable photographs, will throw light on the major causes and events of the Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. It is hoped that visitors, especially the younger generation in Hong Kong, can learn more about this important chapter of modern Chinese history, and acquire a better understanding of the steadfastness and perseverance of individuals of the last generation in defending and protecting our motherland, thereby understanding the cruelty of war and the importance of peace.
