24 January 2003 ˇV 21 April 2003
Upper Gallery
ˇ§Zhongshanˇ¨ gunboat, which was originally called ˇ§Yong Fengˇ¨, was renamed in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. From 1913 to 1938 during the period between its sailing back from Japan upon completion and its being shot down by the Japanese fighters, ˇ§Zhongshanˇ¨ gunboat witnessed the historyof Republican China, including Sunˇ¦s movement to protect Constitution, the rise of Chiang Kai-shek, the split of the Nationalist Party, and the War of Resistance against Japan. In 1997, thanks to the painstaking effort of the specialists in Hubei Province, the ˇ§Zhongshanˇ¨ gunboat was salvaged from the bottom of the Changjiang River. With the display of some 80 artefacts on loan from Wuhan, we hope that our audience can have a better understanding of the scale and unique features of this historic gunboat, as well as its vicissitudes in the modern Chinese history.
