People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison Exhibition

Period: 31 July 2009 - 31 March 2010
Location: Upper Gallery

People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison (simply known as the Hong Kong Garrison) was sent by the Central Government of People's Republic of China to take charge of the defence of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). It came under the command of the Central Military Commission. The stationing of troops of PLA in Hong Kong has embodied China's territorial sovereignty over the land, water and air space of Hong Kong. According to the Basic Law and the Garrison Law, the role of the Hong Kong Garrison of PLA is to defend the Hong Kong SAR. At zero hour on 1 July 1997, the Garrison officially entered Hong Kong to take over the defence duties. This opened a new chapter in the history of Hong Kong's defence.

The Garrison has been instructed to uphold the objectives of serving the people, carrying out duties loyally, abiding by the law and rules, thus winning the trust and respect of the Hong Kong people. This exhibition features the formation of the Garrison, their positions after deployment into Hong Kong, their training, and their contributions to the community and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
