Central Battery: 64 pounder RML gun No. 1

This battery was completed in March 1887 and mounted with two 64 pounder rifled muzzle loading (RML) Mark III guns on traversing platforms. The 64 pounder RML gun had a range of 3,600 metres firing a common shell weighing 64 pounds (29 kg). The No.1 gun stood about 51 metres above sea level and had an arc of fire of 95 degrees. The gun barrel displayed in the emplacement is a 7 inch (17.8 cm) RML Mark I gun weighing 4.5 tons (4,582 kg) dating from the 1870s, unearthed from the Admiralty Garden site in 1990. It is mounted on a replicated traversing carriage.
