Ditch
-Ditch to the north of the Redoubt

Ditch

Enemy infantry attacking the Redoubt would have had to cross the excavated ditch which surrounds it on three sides. It was cut in the rock of the headland and it is probable that excavated material was used to form the earthworks which enclose the Redoubt itself. Three caponiers, or detached defensive structures, projected from the scarp and would have provided flanking fire in the event of an enemy attack.
