Lecture and Dinner — Chinese Art Collections in Slovenia by Dr Natasa Vampelj Suhadolnik

On July 17, 2014, Natasa Vampelj Suhadolnik, Assistant Professor of Chinese Art History at the Department of Asian and African Studies of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), gave a lecture on "Chinese Art Collections in Slovenia". Prof Suhadolnik presented a fascinating profile of early collectors of Chinese art which included Slovenian missionaries, adventurers, and military officers during the 19th and early 20th centuries. She focused in particular on the collections belonging to the missionary Peter Baptist Turk, who specialised in Buddhist devotional statues, and that of Ivan Skusek, a prolific collector whose collection includes photographs, books, furniture and textiles, among other art objects.

Prof Suhadolnik is the 2014 J. S. Lee Memorial Fellow and is spending one year studying the cataloguing system at the National Palace Museum Taipei as well as travelling throughout the region.

Following the lecture, members enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Hong Kong Club accompanied by a lively exchange of ideas.
