Lecture and Gallery Tour: The Sacred and Profane – the Life and Art of Caravaggio (1571 – 1610)

On April 8, 2014, Nancy Lee, the Chairman of the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, gave a lecture on the Italian Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and his works. The talk coincided with the exhibition of the painting "Supper at Emmaus" (1606) from the Pinacoteca di Brera at the Asia Society, and provided a unique insight into the historic, artistic and personal life of Caravaggio.

"Supper at Emmaus" describes the scene in which Christ appears to two disciples on the evening of Easter Sunday as they set off for Emmaus. They invite the stranger to come and share their meal and it is not until the bread is broken that they recognise the resurrected Christ.

Following the lecture and viewing of the exhibition, members enjoyed a delicious dinner at Ammo Café accompanied by a lively exchange of ideas.
