Ancient Chinese scholars viewed the cosmos with an exquisite sense of harmony. Cultural activities, such as Chinese calligraphy, painting, music, chess, poetry and the appreciation of flowers involve the state of being harmonious with the nature. Traditional Chinese gardens demonstrate the appreciation of naturalism from an aesthetic point of view. The size and shape of the artworks in this exhibition is as delicately wrought as the stationery of the Chinese calligraphy. The material used is wood which imitates well as though the works are made of solid rock and blurs the distinction between the organic and the man-made. This exhibition represents the ancient Chinese garden from a new perspective. A miniature garden that can be put on the desk is perfect for the hustle and bustle of the modern life. Not only can the observer enjoy and appreciate the garden at a close distance, but they also can have a chance to reflect on their relationship with the nature.
Hanison loves to create his works of installation with ready-made objects. He also has a keen interest in history and literature. Recently, Hanison selected some of his favourite Chinese poems in Tang and Song Dynasties as his inspiration for a sculpture and painting series, imaginatively interpreting the conceptual space from words into physical installations.
