Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme V Sea of Hope — Works by Foon Sham
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department Organised by the Art Promotion Office Project Partners: Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Art in Hospital Arts Accessibility Service Partner: Jockey Club Arts Accessibility Service Centre, ADAHK
How do you express your feelings when you're frustrated or sad? Working in his studio one night on an upcoming exhibition, sculptor Foon Sham was overcome by a sudden surge of emotion for his mother, who had been planning to attend the exhibition opening but had passed away from cancer. In deep grief and sorrow, he decided to carve a long wooden vessel in her memory and to express his hope that she would be able to continue her journey in peace and harmony. The other members of his family are not artists, but they paid tribute to his beloved mother by making paper boats on which they wrote their own blessings, and Foon then combined these with the long wooden vessel to make his work of art "Sea of Hope".
Full of love and remembrance, the work is currently on display at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where visitors are encouraged to make their own contribution to the piece: anyone with a wish or heartfelt need to say something is invited to come and write their message on a paper boat, which they can then place alongside the long wooden vessel to deliver their blessings to their loved ones who remain eternally in their memory.

"Art for Soothing – Workshop for Patients" Response Exhibition During the exhibition "Sea of Hope — Works by Foon Sham", the Art Promotion Office joined hands with Art in Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital to co-organise the "Art for Soothing – Workshop for Patients", in which patients suffering from chronic illness were introduced to the theme of "Sea of Hope"and encouraged to express their emotions and share their hopes and dreams through painting and other forms of creation. These emotive paintings are now on display at the hospital as a response to Foon's work of art, combining with it in a joint exploration of the meaning of life.
