Introduction

The Entertainment Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is responsible for organizing two main categories of entertainment programmes, i.e., territory-wide festive events and regular free entertainment programmes held in the 18 districts of Hong Kong.

Aim

• To provide free family entertainment to the public during major traditional festivals;
• To bring regular and varied entertainment to all walks of life in their neighbourhood;
• To promote performing arts;
• To preserve and promote traditional Chinese art and
• To provide performance opportunities for upcoming artists and art groups.

Territory-wide Festive Events and Carnivals

Territory-wide festivals/carnivals are presented during major festive occasions throughout the year, including the Lunar New Year Lantern Carnivals , Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnivals and New Year's Eve Countdown Carnival, featuring a variety of spectacular entertainment and participatory activities by local and visiting artists. Other territory-wide carnivals include Summer Fun Party, Summer Thematic Programmes and Youth Band Marathon.

Regular Free Entertainment Programmes

Regular free entertainment programmes are organized on a monthly basis at various outdoor and indoor venues, such as parks, playgrounds, podiums/plazas of housing estates, community arts centres and community halls. These programmes offer a wide choice to cater for diversified interests of the public including cultural programmes (covering western and Chinese programmes of classical and traditional nature) and popular programmes (performances with a popular appeal, such as variety show, pop concert and magic show). Not only to promote performing arts but also the programmes serve to provide performance opportunities for upcoming artists and art groups.

Other Special Programmes

Apart from these major festivals are carnivals co-presented with District Councils, district organizations and sponsored by commercial organizations, such as the fireworks displays of Lunar New Year and National Day, JAL Sky School in collaboration with the Japan Airlines and HK TVB, the Asia Ethnic Cultural Performances in co-presentation with local organizations and the co-organization with the Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong to present the Concert in the Park.

New Outlook with an Innovative Twist

Always a crowd-pleaser, large-scale events and carnivals will continue to provide the public with new and exciting infotainment to keep abreast with the time. We also undertake to conduct regular reviews of cultural activities across the districts to ensure that they respond to rapid-changing community needs.
