10 Brothers Dance with the Dragon A spectacular lantern display at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui is going to highlight the "double celebration" of this year's Mid-autumn Festival and the 10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR. The focus of display is a dragon lantern, resplendent and luminous, which runs for a staggering length of 80 metres and is accompanied by the life-size lanterns of ten boys. The dragon is a popular icon in Chinese culture, a symbol of good luck, energetic drive, peace and prosperity. Its presence at the Lantern Display echoes Hong Kong's global brand, the "Hong Kong Dragon", and signifies the cultural roots of the community. This energetic and playful dragon dances at the hands of the "Ten Brothers" – ten boys with exceptional powers depicted in a popular legend in China: the eldest can see for a thousand miles, the second can hear sounds far, far away, the third has Herculean strength, the fourth has an elastic body that can stretch to any length, the fifth can fly, the sixth has a head as hard as steel, the seventh has very long legs, the eighth can disappear into the earth, the ninth has a huge mouth that can gobble up anything, and when the tenth cries, his tears can run to fill a river or a sea. Their story has been made into films and a highly popular television series that is loved by the young and the young-at-heart in many parts of the world. The image of the ‘Ten Brothers’ doing a dragon dance symbolizes concerted efforts and solidarity, and is befitting of the spirit of the people of Hong Kong. 14.9.2007 (Fri) – 21.10.2007 (Sun) Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza
A fun-filled lantern carnival at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade is going to make this year's Mid-autumn Festival special. Lanterns in the shape of ten types of creatures, numbering ten in each category to tie in with the 10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR, are on display. They will turn the promenade into a dazzling playground of light. Among the one hundred life-size lanterns, the most eye-catching will be Fuwa Huanhuan, the mascot of the Equestrian Events of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games held in Hong Kong. It is riding on a horse, ready for the game of challenge. Le Le and Ying Ying, the giant pandas that have captured the hearts of all Hong Kong in the past months, will be frolicking on the lawn with their panda friends. Other creatures chosen for the lantern carnival represent well-wishes for all occasions: the turtle and the crane are symbols of longevity; the horse and the monkey form a rebus in Chinese meaning "one leap to success and eminence"; and the carp and the lotus form the rebus of "abundant years". The Tibetan antelope is an animal of peace, the tiger is "awesome energy", and the swallow is a harbinger of good news. The rabbit is traditionally associated with the moon because according to Chinese legend, Chang'e, the Lady in the Moon, has a "jade rabbit" to keep her company. By tradition, the Mid-autumn Festival is celebrated with family reunions. So make it a family outing to the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade to enjoy the fun of exploring a playground luminescent with creatures of light and colour! 14.9.2007 (Fri) – 1.10.2007 (Mon) West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade
