Director Tu Guangqi’s social realist masterpiece explores the problem of children devoided of their education because of poverty. Tsui Siu-ming stars as Siu-ming, one of the students who can’t afford to stay in school despite his excellent academic record. Unable to return to school, Siu-ming leaves home and becomes the leader of a gang of young thieves. With the help of his loving teacher Miss Tsui (Ting Ying), Siu-ming and his fellow delinquents are rescued from their life of crime. However, Siu-ming’s rocky journey hits another obstacle along the way... In this impressively grounded performance, Siu-ming displays a natural transformation from a timid student to a reformed young criminal without going over-the-top. Ting Ying’s gentle performance as Siu-ming’s saviour is equally touching.
