Adapted from Giovanni Verga’s most famous novel I Malavoglia, set at a Sicilian fishing village from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. Young fisherman 'Ntoni mortgaged his own house to buy his boat, in hope to live his family out from poverty and to challenge the exploitation by the boat owners. But a storm sent his dream into turmoil and his family into greater hardships. Visconti used entirely non-professional actors and filmed in a documentary style, transposing the epic scope of Verga’s novel and Antonio Gramsci’s theory on Italy’s poverty on to the big screen.
