De Sica’s personal favourite film also carries the tradition of using non-professional actors. Carlo Battisti is a real life linguist and this is his only performance in film, but his portrayal of a disillusioned man is most memorable. A retired civil servant with no children but a dog, he was chased off his home because he could not afford the rent, and he considered ending his life with his beloved dog. In the eyes of De Sica, man or dogs are struggling to survive.
