In this quasi-spinoff of Little Cheung , young illegal immigrant Fan bonds with Yan, a woman who comes to Hong Kong from northeast China to work as a prostitute. After her time in Hong Kong, Yan returns to her hometown and once again comes face-to-face with her real life at home. Unlike Little Cheung , Durian Durian is more of a contemplative neo-realism drama that chronicles the lives of two women living temporarily in a strange land. The film is sparsely plotted, but its characters are intricately and delicately drawn. The durian – a major presence in the film – is like Hong Kong, dangerous on the surface with a foul smell, but also oddly delicious once consumed.
