This marks scriptwriter Chiu Kang-chien (and Lai Kit) and director Stanley Kwan’s second collaboration, following Women (1985). Encouraged by Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s Taipei Story (1986), Kwan wanted to make a film about the dying of old Hong Kong values alongside love and faith, and this black romantic thriller emerged under Chiu’s creative helmsmanship. The story opens with Tsai Chin’s sudden death. During the investigation, Tsai’s boyfriend Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and girlfriend Irene Wan begin an ambivalent relationship. Leung’s secret affair with Elaine Jin’s is also uncovered. The case remains unsolved and the film ends with detective Chow Yun-fat waiting for his own death. Deftly mixing detective thriller and romance, the film explores the dark side of human nature, the environment and of sentiments, inspiring introspection. Winner of Best Screenplay in the Hong Kong Film Awards 1987, it’s also Chiu’s favourite work.
