1993 / Colour / DCP / Cantonese / Chi & Eng Subtitles / 91min
Based on the naamyam (Cantonese narrative singing) classic, the film follows closely to the plot of the lovers' love-and-hate, on-and-off affairs and intents to continue the tradition of narrative singing, as seen in the mesmerizing opening scene of a radio drama broadcast. Out of a misunderstanding popular radio host Cheng (Lawrence Cheng) fell into the sea and is rescued by an umbrella baring the spirit of a ghost (Tao Jun-mei) who is looking for her lover (David Wu) and later started a love triangle involving Cheng. Fruit Chan began his directing career with this film before Made In Hong Kong (1997). Although the film is released a few years after it is made and has not attracted much attention, it is a piece of work that first shows Chan’s talent.
