While Donnie Yen’s 3D remake is yet to be release, let's first enjoy this 1989 version by director Clarence Fok. Well-exposed to and inspired by the many Hollywood time travel movies made during the 1980s, Fok created this hysterical comedy combining elements of sci-fi, action comedy and fantasy. Fong, a royal guard from the Ming Dynasty (Yuen Biao) and the pervert criminal he chases (Yuen Wah) are trapped and frozen in an ice chasm in the middle of a fight. After some 300 years they find themselves defrosted in modern-day Hong Kong and entangled in a relationship with a downtown girl (Maggie Cheung). Wacky comedy ensures just as much as the continual of their rivalry in this creative historical, martial arts fantasy and humorous interplay of Hong Kong cultural subtleties.
