"Street Sweeper Elmo" is a household name in the 1970s being a comical insert in TVB’s variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight. An underprivileged worker constantly being abused, Elmo induced jokes via his silly acts, but also won audience’s sympathy by his heart of gold. The film adaptation is a series of comical dramas centred around Elmo’s effort to get married despite a lot of barriers cast by his potential mother-in-law. The skinny Elmo makes a great comedian pair with his fat comrade, Ah Fook, who, in their attempt to earn some quick money, got involved in trial society activities. The film took the audience through a parade of illegal casino, drug divans and night clubs to reveal the various ridiculous activities occurring in a city under the cover of prosperity. In the end, as Elmo demonstrates, it is sympathy and dignity that counts. The actor who plays Elmo is in fact Li Tim-shing, who later scripted numerous popular and memorable TV dramas.
