Based on an erotic classic, the film features mind-blowing ancient sex postures and lovemaking scenes. The story begins with a debate between a scholar and a monk, and ends with the scholar taking the monastic vow, but this is only a pretext for his philandering journey. The film was a box-office hit, grossing some $20 million, mainly thanks to the collaboration between producer Stephen Siu, director Michael Mak and cinematographer Peter Ngor. With the intention of making an “out-of-the ordinary” adult film, they cast Hong Kong and Japanese porn stars, and built magnificent sets. The film deliberately imitates the mood of Chinese pornographic pictures, while objects such as flutes, ink brushes, wine and fruits are used as erotic objects. Taking its cue from the costume soft porn movies that emerged in the 1970s, it sparked a number of sequels, including 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (2011), a spectacular alternative work of Golden Harvest.
