With a worldwide box office gross of US$200 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains one of Golden Harvest's most successful western productions. Based on the popular comic book, the film version goes back to the story's origin, introducing the criminal organization known as the Foot Clan and showing how reporter April (Judith Hoag) became friends with the four pizza-loving ninja turtles. Featuring behind-the- scene talents like Muppets designer Jim Henson and Quentin Tarantino's editor Sally Menke, TMNT was the perfect English-language Golden Harvest film: A film for western audiences that also paid homage to their Hong Kong past (including Bruce Lee's nunchuks and Jackie Chan's brand of comedic kung-fu). The version screened here is the Cantonese dubbed version, featuring the members of hugely popular Hong Kong band Beyond as the four ninja turtles.
