Battle Creek Brawl (aka The Big Brawl)
Dir/ Scr: Robert Clouse
Cast: Jackie Chan, Jose Ferrer, Kristine De Bell, Mako Iwamatsu
1980 / Colour / DCP / English / Chi & Eng Subtitles / 96min
More than a decade before finding success in the United States with Rumble in the Bronx (1995) and Rush Hour (1998), Jackie Chan made his first attempt at the American market with this action romp by the creators of Enter the Dragon (1973) (including director Robert Clouse). Chan serves as the action choreographer and stars as a restaurant owner's son forced to participate in a free-for-all fighting tournament and ends up taking on the mafia. With a chaotic finale that features a messy rendition of the American national anthem and Chan taking on a group of oversized wrestlers, Battle Creek Brawl is a strange, but entertaining mix of a 1930's gangland thriller and a typical Jackie Chanstyle action comedy.
