Fist of Fury
(aka The Chinese Connection)
Dir/ Scr: Lo Wei
Cast: Bruce Lee, Nora Miao, Tian Feng, Wei Pin-ao
1972 / Colour / DCP / Mandarin / Chi & Eng Subtitles / 102 min
During the Japanese control of Shanghai, martial artist Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) mourns the death of his master Huo Yuan jia. Some Japanese made a scene by presenting a banner bearing the words "Weaklings of East Asia" in an attempt to provoke national hatred during the funeral. Chen takes it to be his duty to make anyone who humiliates his fellow Chinese his enemy. In this second production with director Lo Wei after The Big Boss (1971), Lee successfully created the classic image of a tragic hero with his darting strikes, fearless eyes and signature battle cries. His appearance as a humble rickshaw driver and a nerdy telephone repairman while spying on his enemies reminds one of his earlier delinquent image in Cantonese cinema.
