Palme d’Or, Cannes Film Festival 2007
Another renowned film from the Romanian New Wave; the story has the same controversial topic with a sharp viewpoint, reflecting the society through a simple matter, and with suspense and black humour. A female university student tries to look for a physician to perform an abortion, but a series of indecision lead to more crisis and even some irony situations. In a society closed off for too long, the human mind was still not ready to open up. The satire was so critical that it becomes melancholic. The film won the Palme d’Or in the Cannes Film Festival 2007 and later distributed worldwide.
Cristian Mungiu has a mastery of genre film techniques as well as an international vision, striking a balance between aesthetics and a niche in the marketplace, skillfully blending personal feelings and values through popular drama. His new film Beyond the Hills (2012) won the Best Screenplay and Best Actress Awards at Cannes, further pushed Romanian cinema into the international limelight.
